This webinar in the Leadership and strategy for sustainable health systems series is the first of seven events highlighting seven organizational practices to advance strategic planning for sustainable healthcare. These practices are presented in the upcoming CASCADES playbook Strategic Planning for Sustainable Healthcare. The series is organized in partnership with the with the University of British Columbia Sauder School of Business/Centre for Climate and Business Solutions, the Sandra Rotman Centre for Health Sector Strategy at the University of Toronto Rotman School of Management, Dalhousie University Faculty of Management, and other university partners.

Penny Ballem was appointed Chair of the Board of VCH in January 2019.
Dr. Ballem is a clinical professor of medicine at the University of British Columbia (UBC) and a fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences. She has had a 35-year career as a health leader and academic clinician in British Columbia. She served as the B.C. deputy minister of health from 2001-06. She also served as the city manager for the City of Vancouver from 2008-15.
She has extensive board experience, having served on public sector, non-profit and private sector boards. She has received significant public recognition for her work in medicine and public service, including the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal for Public Service, the 2012 Wallace Wilson Award for leadership, the Marion Powell Award from Women’s College Hospital for leadership in Women’s Health, the Cannell Award from the Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists of Canada for her contributions to leadership in reproductive health and others. She advises governments across Canada on health policy, health systems and health human resources.
Darcia Pope is the Vice President, Strategy, Innovation & Planetary Health.
As Vice President, Darcia Pope supports the measurement and realization of benefits and outcomes of transformation initiatives that shape the way VCH provides care and service. She identifies barriers and strategies to ensure initiatives and projects remain on track, move to completion, and are aligned with the organization’s strategic priorities and long term financial plans.
With a Bachelor of Commerce degree and Masters in Health Administration, delivering results is something Darcia has extensive experience in. Her health career has included roles as Patient Care Manager for the Outpatient Department at St. Paul’s Hospital and Change Leader for the amalgamation of Providence Health Care. Darcia joined VCH in 2002 where among her roles was Director of Enterprise Services in IMITS and the new position of Executive Director of Transformation. In that role, Darcia’s focus would shift over the years to include Workforce Optimization, Green Care, Primary and Community Systems projects, and Strategic Initiatives. Darcia has led the Strategic Planning process for SET since 2013, establishing the Office of Strategy Management in 2016.
