Discover sustainable health systems

We are supporting Canada’s healthcare community to transition toward high-quality, low-carbon, climate resilient care.

What does climate have to do with healthcare?

Climate change can affect the health of individuals and populations, as well as contribute to healthcare-related greenhouse gas emissions. The World Health Organization has linked climate change to an increase in deaths, illnesses, diseases, and mental health issues.

How does the healthcare system contribute to climate change?

If the healthcare sector were a country, it would be the 5th largest emitter globally. In Canada, the healthcare system ranks third highest in per-capita greenhouse gas emissions and contributes 5% of Canada’s total emissions.

How does climate change impact health equity?

Climate change can create new barriers to health equity and strengthen existing ones. People who experience structural marginalization are disproportionately affected by extreme weather events, loss of access to land, food insecurity, chronic stress, and other direct impacts of climate change. These impacts deepen existing inequities.

What is a sustainable health system?

A sustainable health system aims to promote, maintain, or restore health, while minimizing negative impacts on the environment and leveraging opportunities to restore and improve it. This benefits the health and well-being of current and future generations.

Who is involved in creating a climate conscious, sustainable health system in Canada?

There pan-Canadian organizations dedicated to supporting sustainable healthcare, as well as groups working in regions across the country. There are also environmental chapters in many professional associations and green teams in institutions working at various scales to promote sustainable healthcare practices. In 2021, Canada participated in the 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) and signed on to a World Health Organization commitment to developing climate resilient and low carbon sustainable health systems.
